4-Mallet Keyboard Techniques

DISCLAIMER: This is to be studied AFTER Basic Keys, because “4-mallets” is not an instrument 😁

Playing with 4-mallets in the hand is common practice in many areas of percussion, and adds significant mechanical demand for players. The MUSICAL demand of the instrument, however, remains the same, so a solid MUSICAL foundation is important before adding the complication of any 4-mallet technique.

Materials here are based on my experience and use of the “Stevens Technique”, as well as the “Extended Cross-Grip” developed by Ney Rosauro after the work of Gary Burton. I believe these materials are valid and helpful in the development of any other grip or method of holding the sticks as well.

Download and print this worksheet to help guide your practice. This goes with the following two videos on Double-Vertical and Single-Independent strokes.
