Snare Drum

By no means an exhaustive list, these are the books I draw on and teach from the most.

Stick Control: George Lawrence Stone

Alfred’s Drum Method Complete: Feldstein, Black and Wanamaker

Solo Album: James Coffin

Portraits in Rhythm: Anthony Cirone

Probably the most popular snare solo book in the world, and on almost every All-State list in the United States.  I have recordings of all my favorites.  There are many great recordings of this book.

14 Modern Contest Solos: J.S. Pratt

One of the most important solo writers for snare drum.  These 14 solos are standard rudimental literature.  Here’s a tribute version written by members of the Hellcats from West Point, of which Pratt was a member.

This is a solo performance from the book by Rick Dior.  The pad he plays on makes the details of volume and the weight of each note very clear.  He has recorded every solo from three of Pratt’s books.

Snare Drum in the Concert Hall: Al Payson

Advanced Etudes for Snare Drum: Keith Aleo

Douze Etudes: Jacques Delécluse

Perhaps the most advanced lyrical writing available on the snare drum.  My friend, Rob Knopper has incredible recordings of the entire collection.
